Lets put the rubber to the road!

Hello there this is GHF, and thanks for being patient with me. I am involved in at least 100 different things at any one time and I have not had the time to ever get this review written. The First review here is of course the 2007 Mazda MX5. Let's start off by saying WOW! This is one hell of a car! Let me give you the run down of the cars stats. The new MX5 PRHT ( Power hardtop) weighs in at a nice 2,573 which is lighter than both the Pontiac Solstice and also the Saturn Sky. The horse power comes in a 166 and goes from 0-60 in about 7 sec. A little quicker than both the Sky and Solstice that both have more horse power. The new ambassador of zoom zoom has under it's bonnet a 2.0l DOHC 16 Value 4 cylinder engine and gets fair gas mileage but I think it could do better here's the stats on that for the most part all most of the models are getting 25/30 while the touring and grand touring are looking at 24/30 and with the automatic it's not quite as good at 22/30. The car comes with an optional DSC ( Dynamic Stability control) with traction control. I guess these things are good for unfavorable conditions but sure does take some of the fun away. I liked having it switched off in good weather. This thing also does something that I salute it handles like a Miata should with the ride smoothness of a SUV. The MX5 also comes with something that I think is pretty darn cool. Once the latch of the hardtop is undone there is a switch that raises the volume of the radio. One of the only short comings of the car is the interior room. However, this shouldn't come as a surprise. After all every Miata that I have ever been in shares the same problem. I guess if you want more room go buy a SUV or something. Now lets talk about the quality of the car. Lets just say that I was blown away! This care puts you in the mind of a very upscale and pricey European car. Everything just fits right, and everything just seems to be done with all the right materials. I really can't say enough about this car. Some people have complained about the quality of the audio system, but I seriously doubt that is going to be the deciding factor on buying or not buying this or any other car. However, if it is than you are such a lame ass I really don't want you reading this and please stop now. Now, back to the car. This car also has the bragging rights to do that no other retractable hardtop can say. It doesn't loose any trunk space with the addition of the retractable hardtop. This is truly an amazing feat and I just love it, and the folks over at Mazda need a big pat on the back. You know way back when I believe late 1989 when the Miata first came out there wasn't really any competition, but now things have changed and the competition is fierce. I think the Mazda guys have handled this greatly. Some of the only draw back that I can think of is that once the hardtop is up you might find a little less head room than what you would like. Also there is not quite as much rear vision than what I would like. The hardtop also creates a little bit of a blind spot so you might to take special note of that. Does any of this dampen my enthusiasm for this car? Not really no. Now how about the numbers? What is all of this going to cost? well, a hell of a lot less than a BMW Z4 and you get a lot more car! Yes, I said it because it's true damn it! Is it as fast as a Sky redline or a Solstice GXP? Heck no, but the build quality of this car really is second to none and not to mention it has a RETRACTABLE HARDTOP! Why is this so darn important? Well, sit back and let Fred tell you. I have own several rag tops and as much as I loved them all I hated that damn rag top. Cats poke holes in it. Idiots like to cut it, and the sun, wind, and snow love to destroy it. This lends to replacement costs and man o' man do I mean replacement costs. This is like having two cars in one. This is the kind of car that even non rag top people can have. All of you out there that some sort of weird phobia of rag tops, but were always a closet rag top wannabe then this is for you. You can have the fun in the sun and with the flip of a switch (button really) and in a 12 secs you have a hardtop and the security that you always whimpered for. Coupe or drop top it's the best of both worlds. Now as promised before the rant the numbers: SU $21,180 SPORT $22,180 TOURING $23,985 and the top of the line GRAND TOURING $25,245 This is Gear Head Fred setting the brake for now...

Some banner and links

Yes, you are going to notice that there will be banners and links on the blog. I have placed these on my blog to try to help defray my cost and of course to make a little extra money. GHF has to eat too. So, please don't be put off by them. If you are a huge car nut like myself you might even like some of the products that these companies are selling. Take care and hit that happy hiway!

Gear Head Fred Test Drive

Hello there! This is Gear Head fred. This is going to be great guys! I'm just a regular guy who speaks to regular guys about cars. That's right. Once I get this blog up and running I'm going to try to go out and test drive a new car or truck and give all of you an honest and easy to understand review of the automobile. I won't have any automobile sponsor to kiss up to so If I do not like the vehicle I will tell you so and why. Okay, gotta go for now but keep checking back often. I can tell you now though that the first vehilce of the chopping block will be the 2007 retractable hardtop MX5 also known as a Miata. ( Mazda has since dropped the name Miata since it was only used in North American markets anyway)

later,
